HOW TO LOSE A GUY IN 10 DAYS (2003)
One of them is lying. So is the other
How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days tells the story of Andie Anderson, who has to write an article titled 'How To Lose A Guy
In 10 Days' for her magazine Composure, and advertising executive Benjamin Barry who bets, to win a big campaign, that
he can make any woman fall in love with him. They meet in a bar later that day and after a series of dates they find
themselves falling in love with each other... despite Andie's increasingly hilarious attempts to drive Ben away...

KATE SAYS...
» "It's really fun. I saw it recently, and although I always have the worst time watching anything of mine
for the first time, I had so much fun on this movie. I was really proud of it."
» " I did get involved in the picture very early on, before there was anybody attached as a director.
Lynda Obst produced it. But it was the first time I worked so closely with a producer. Every time somebody
new came onto the picture, Lynda and I maintained the same energy and vibe that we had when we started.
We wanted to make a really smart, funny, romantic comedy--most importantly, funny. You can only read so
many romantic comedies that just don't have the humor."
» "Matthew's so great. I knew that he would be easy and fun and down to earth and a hard worker. We
had the best time together. Donald Petrie was so enthusiastic. He was wonderful and collaborative."
» "Matthew had this thing where he always said "voila"--for everything. It turned into a running joke.
In every single scene, every take, there was always a "voila." It got to the point where, at the end of
the movie, on the wrap reel there was a whole "voila" section."
» "When you do a movie like How to Lose a Guy you remember what it is that makes you love what you
do so much. You meet so many great people, and you realize how lucky you are."
» "I felt everybody on the set was so open for me, to just go nuts. So therefore we all enjoyed it
and had a good time. It was good, it was exhilarating to just go crazy."
» "The movie is about a female perspective and a male perspective of the same situation. That's why I was
so attracted to the script. It was different like that, and old fashioned. It was these two people.
And the only thing getting in the way was the actual situation, not some other guy or girl."
» [when asked if any of the 10 things seemed familiar] "I think a lot of them seemed uncomfortably
familiar to me! But not the dog thing. Although Chris (Robinson) and I did buy two cats within a month of
being together. But that didn't ruin our relationship obviously! I think the thing of calling a guy
constantly, you know, I've been there."
» "Working with Harry Winston was a phenomenal experience, the whole thing was pretty yummy. But it
was a love story with an unhappy ending, because I couldn't take Isadora with me! "
» "I was attracted to the project in the first place because it was almost like playing two different
characters, y'know--Andie the working girl and then crazy Andie. I liked the idea of the lengths you
go to be good at your job. Any character with so many things to do is always challenging and fun."
» [on Matthew] "He reminded me of somebody I might have grown up with. He's so crazy and easy. He's very
passionate and totally insane in the best way. He makes you laugh and sometimes you don't understand
half the things that are coming out of his mouth but I enjoyed every moment of working with him."
» "I can ride a motorcycle too. I learned on a Yamaha, the little dirt bikes, then I went on to a
Harley. It was really heavy but the stunt coordinator Jack Gill showed up with a pink Harley and I
went 'that's great!'. I learned how to drive that. Then when I got on the Triumph for this film,
it was so much lighter that I actually could really drive it. I love riding motorcycles."
» "I said 'let's get a Chinese Crested because they're funny' and I have a friend who has one of them.
I love animals so much that I look at that dog and say 'you're so ugly that you're the cutest thing
I've ever seen in my life'. They're very funny dogs and they're really smart. There were two,
Harry and Izzy, they were twins. I had to carry them around a lot. It was really fun."
REVIEWS
TheMovieBoy.com: "As they
reluctantly start to really like each other, there are quite a few engagingly sweet and romantic scenes, to boot,
helped immeasurably by the chemistry Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey ignite. For Hudson, this is her first
big lead role, and she is fabulous as Andie even when the screenplay lets her down."
ThisIsLocalLondon.com:
"McConaughey and Hudson have bags of [chemistry] and their enthusiasm translates well to the audience, so that the
hopelessness of certain situations seldom seems as contrived as it might. Both also possess heaps of charisma..."
theworldjournal.com:
"...the chemistry between Hudson and McConaughey is formidable"
TheBoxSet.com: "Stars Matthew McConaughey
and, especially, Kate Hudson jump out in their roles and chew up the dialogue. You can tell they had a lot of
fun filming this movie and they have a tremendous amount of chemistry together. McConaughey and Hudson sizzle on
screen and I hope that they do many more movies together."
IndependentCritics.com:
"Hudson, looking obscenely gorgeous yet again, really carries this film with a performance that will get overlooked
because of the slapstick nature of the role. It takes real talent to be that adorable."
IOFilm.co.uk:
"The chemistry works and the style takes in the city beautifully. Hudson dazzles."
ESPY.ca: "The film tends to steer away
from some of the more obvious cliches, and this is something that gives the film big points by this critic;
the storyline is also most reminiscent of the classic romance movie whereby one might readily compare
Hudson’s character to the likes of Doris Day and McConaughey’s to a modern-day Rock Hudson.
Canoe Jam Movies:
"Those who are not fans of Hollywood romantic comedy lite will not have their minds changed by How To Lose A
Guy In 10 Days. It could help you become a serious fan of Kate Hudson or Matthew McConaughey, though."
Urban CineFile:
"First of all, let’s look at the star ingredients. Kate Hudson sparkles through the entire film with such
good nature and impish girlie charm, that we can’t help but fall in love with her."
ApolloMovieGuide.com: "Of
particular note is Hudson, who has a giggly charm about her that is irresistible. She is a strong female who is always
in control of herself – except when love comes calling, which is when most of us lose it anyways. Hudson does a
good job of playing out the embellished scenarios her character comes up with, acting innocent yet conniving
at the same time."
San Francisco Chronicle:
"The picture benefits enormously from the casting of Kate Hudson, who already at 23 is a nimble and confident comic
actress; and from the presence of Matthew McConaughey, who almost gets as many laughs as Hudson playing it straight."

TRIVIA
{1} Thomas Lennon, who played Thayer, was also in Le Divorce with Kate, as Roger Walker.

in her hand. She hands it to Ben. Then she gets in the cab and he takes it from her again.

shot she is waving with her other hand.

{5} Continuity error - Andie's hair changes from very wavy/curly to nearly straight between shots in the bathroom.
{6} Continuity error - Andie's hands alternate between holding food, holding a fork and being folded during
the lobster dinner scene at the beginning.
{7} Gwyneth Paltrow was originally going to play Andie
{8} Kate improvised plastering Matthew with kisses during the scene where she
introduces the new dog. This is why Matthew looks genuinely surprised.
{9} Kate's salary for this film was $4,500,000
{10} 'Sleepless In Seattle' is Andie's "favourite movie of all time"
{11} There may be a sequel to this film, to be titled 'How To Tell He's Not The One In 10 Days' but Kate
and Matthew will not be in it

{13} This is Kate's biggest box office hit to date
{14} The basketball footage was taken at the 6 November 2002 game between the Knicks and the Kings
(the Knicks won 96-88).
{15} A lot of the scenes were improvised including the scene with the "family album".
{16} Continuity error - Several times during the movie, especially in the first time she goes
to Ben's apartment, Andie is wearing matching rings, which then disappear during the scene.
{17} Continuity error - After the first Knicks game, when Ben and Andie are at the taxi, Andie hands Ben
the soda twice.
{18} Continuity error - When Ben teaches Andie to ride a motorcycle, he takes off his helmet and puts
it on the bench. They both ride the bike to the next bench where we see his helmet.
{19} Continuity error - When Andie arrives at the DeLauer party, she is wearing no earrings. Later,
after Andie and Ben leave the ballroom, she is wearing the necklace and earrings. The security only
asks for the necklace, and she takes the earrings.
{20} When Ben is reading Andie's magazine article, you can see the same paragraph/sentences are
just repeated throughout the article.
WORTH WATCHING FOR...
... an hilarious romantic comedy, with Kate and Matthew on top form sparring away. Kate proves her comedic skills
through Andie's crazy actions, and the romantic side is just as good with the couple showing great chemistry. This
film really IS funny and is not one to miss!
