RAISING HELEN (2004)
Helen helps us
Raising Helen tells the story of Helen Harris, a young woman who is living the life she's always dreamed of: a career
at a top modeling agency, night's out at the hottest clubs, and front row seats at fashion shows. Her life is suddenly
changed when her sister and brother-in-law are killed in a car accident, and Helen finds herself responsible for
her sister's children: 15-year-old Audrey, 10-year-old Henry, and 5-year-old Sarah. Helen may be a cool aunt, but can
she raise kids? Her elder sister Jenny is constantly on her back, hurt that she was not given custody of the kids, and
Helen has to juggle her career and her new kids, but along the way she finds support from an unexpected source - Pastor
Dan, the principal of the kids' new school.

KATE SAYS...
» "When I read the script it was obviously something that hit home for me. And it was at a time where
I was thinking about having kids so it kind of fit in perfectly to my mind set at the time. I did
have moments in the midst of the three kids all talking to me at once and I just went, 'is this what
it's gonna be like. All of a sudden, there is all this craziness.' I'm so happy that I wasn't a mom when
I made the movie because I would've played it very differently. It was so much more emotional for me as
a mother than it was when I saw it when I was pregnant."
» "I'm just so happy I made it because it's a movie that I would want to go see."
» "He (John Corbett) is a sexy man. As for working with Helen Mirren, it's great to work with people who
are talented and you can learn things from."
» "The movie has so many different aspects to it, but it's like a love letter to single mothers
because it's hard and it's everywhere."
» "Part of the fun is this unmarried career girl trying to be a mother to three kids—while wearing three-inch heels
» "I chose to do this movie because Helen is a real character. Helen goes through a journey and it's rare that an
actress my age will get the chance to read a script like that. I'm not yet 32 and so producers feel as though
I can't play those kind of responsible characters, because I'm not at that stage in my life."
» [about the movie being 'her' movie, and marketed on her] "I admit when I saw the poster I had a moment of
'Wow, that's new. This is different.' And I'm anxious, you know, but I'm not really nervous. It's definitely
an exciting stage in my career."
REVIEWS
» San Francisco Chronicle:
"Hudson has a perky screen presence (too perky for my taste), but she's not yet a movie star capable of shouldering
an entire picture. She needs support. When Hudson gets it, as she did in "Almost Famous,'' she can uncover depths
in her character."
» Urban Cinefile: "I can also say that
beneath all that wrapping are some fine things: Kate Hudson, John Corbett and Joan Cusack rise above the risible with
credible performances despite everything. Hudson's Helen is vibrant and conflicted, her confusion all too tangible."
» Urban Cinefile: "Dazzling us with her
effervescent charm, Kate Hudson makes Garry Marshall's Raising Helen into a far more enjoyable encounter than its
predictable comedy/drama elements may suggest. As for the cast - there's no faulting it. Hudson is just so likeable.
Spontaneously lovely, her charisma is evident everywhere as she carries every scene effortlessly."
» Movie Vault: "Kate Hudson also turns in a nice
performance and manages to convey the stress and raw emotion that her character is experiencing. She works well
with what material she has. Being a fan of hers since Almost Famous I hold out hope that she will find another
script that allows her to match, or even go beyond her performance as Penny Lane in that film."

Teen Choice Awards [2004] - Choice Movie Actress - Comedy (nominated)
TRIVIA
{1} Gary Marshall kept calling Kate 'Goldie' during filming (he had previously directed Goldie in 'Overboard') as he said
they looked and acted so much alike. The crew set up a box for Gary Marshall to pay $5 everytime he called Kate the wrong name,
and at the end of filming the money was spent on a lavish party for the entire cast and crew.
{2} Kate's salary for this film was $7,000,000
{3} Kate became pregnant whilst shooting this movie
{4} Continuity Error - When Helen is in her kitchen you can see Henry's picture on the wall with a basketball,
the next see you see a picture of Sarah above it.
{5} Continuity Error - Helen takes the hair stick out of her mouth twice when she is getting ready to go to
the club at the beginning of the film.
