Kate > Kate & Chris
Since marrying in 2000, Kate and Chris have been one of the most talked about celebrity couples in Hollywood.
Here are the details on the wonderful Mr and Mrs Robinson...
The History
Kate has been a Black Crowes fan for a long time, but when they met she didn't know who he was. When she did find out,
they didn't get on. But when they met again at a New York Party in 2000, they hit it off, and started dating Spring 2000.
Kate's family were always very supportive of her relationship with Chris, and knew it was the real thing. They were
engaged within 6 months.
Previous Relationships? Kate has been linked to Matt le Blanc and Lenny Kravitz. Chris to.... drugs and alcohol.
The Proposal
In Kate's words- "He gave me this beautiful Indian box. He said, 'I've got you a little present. I said,
'Oh it's so beautiful' - I thought the box was the gift. He said, 'Open it.' I opened it up and
there was another box. I opened that and there was a beautiful diamond ring. He didn't say, 'Will you
marry me?' He said he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me. He said, 'I know you're young and
I would never pressure you to get married, but whenever you're ready.'"
The Wedding
Kate and Chris married on New Years Eve 2000 at a private ranch owned by Goldie and Kurt, in Old Snowmass, Colarado.
Around 70 family and friends were invited, including Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones, Sally Field and the
other members of Black Crowes. Kate wore a Vera Wang 19th century-inspired dress, a strapless ivory silk duchesse
satin ballgown with a hand-stitched corset bodice, and Goldie wore a Vera Wang creation. The theme was white on
white, to celebrate the winter, with white candles and white flowers. BR549 played at the wedding, and the
couple insisted they learned Bob Dylan's "Lay Lady Lay." After the ceremony, guests retreated back to the
Elk Mountain Lodge for the reception, with a dinner of filet mignon and salmon.
'Katie Dear'
Chris wrote a song called 'Katie Dear' that is believed to be about his wife - he says
"The title is a hat's off to an old Louvin Brothers track and I think it's only relevant in
terms of people in love. That's the way they feel when they wake up after they've gone to
sleep with the person that means so much to them. I don't think the song means any more than
it does or anything should be read into it because my wife's famous. The title alone is one
of my favorite old songs. It's kind of like a Romeo and Juliet mountain ballad. Just to be
able to bring a touch of that into something modern and intimate."

The Life Since
In June 2003 the couple announced they were expecting their first child, and on January 7th 2004 Kate gave birth
to Ryder Russell Robinson. The addition of a son made their relationship even stronger, Kate said -
"We're sharing something so gigantic now, I think it's the best we've ever felt being together."
They celebrated their 4th anniversary in Aspen, as Kate was there to open a new Ralph Lauren store. An on-looker
observed they "didn't leave each other's side".
Kate has spent most of her time since giving birth to Ryder on the road with Chris as he tours with The Black Crowes.
Kate is regularly spotted at the side of the stage singing along with Chris and cheering him on. One concert-goer in
April 2004 saw Kate and said she "sang along to every word at what appeared to be the top of her lungs. She was
just beaming at Chris." Despite this, there were the usual 'marriage problems' rumours which were denied ... and
obviously proved wrong. Kate says she liked to keep her man on his toes by flirting, and she has also said a couple of
times that she believes men need to feel like they're wearing the trousers - "I feel that when you're a working woman,
and you work really hard, you can lose sight of the fact that men need to feel that they wear the trousers. I believe
it's important to make them feel they're cared for."
Kate hit the (gossip) headlines in the summer of 2005 when she declared that she and Chris had made a divorce pact, and
later revealed that she believes monogamy is unrealistic. "There's always going to be temptation. We
made a pact that if that day ever came we'd be honest with each other and say, 'For some reason I want
to sleep with somebody else.' I'd love to say I'm the kind of person who'd say, 'I'm going to go through
the bad and ugly,' and 'Oh God he cheated on me, but we're going to regain our trust.' I'd be gone. You move forward."
When talking to Acces Hollywood she said "I don't believe (monogamy) is realistic. But, I believe that we,
as people, have the power to make it happen", but added: "I will not disrespect my husband and stray." Kate also
said she wouldn't want to know of Chris was unfaithful - "If you focus your attention on that, then you are
always wondering if your husband or men are out there cheating on you. If for some reason, that's what
he has to go do, I just don't want to know. As long as things are good in our house, just please, don't get caught."
In early 2006 Kate returned to the road with Chris as he and The Black Crowes continued their touring,
including dates in the UK in March. Speculation arose around whether Kate was pregnant again, but after a few
weeks she was pictured looking decidedly un-pregnant.
Separation
On August 14th 2006 Kate and Chris announced they were separating after almost 6 years of marriage. No reason
was given for the split, but rumours surfaced that Kate had been getting close with her You, Me and Dupree
co-star Owen Wilson. Kate and Chris were pictured together out with Ryder just a few days after the separation
announcement, leading many to hope for a reconciliation. But later that year, Chris filed for divorce.
In Their Own Words
» She says - "Here's a man who's done and gone through everything that I've only read about in books. Not
only is that a part of him, it makes him the most intelligent and incredible creature I've ever met."
» She says - "When I met Chris, we just knew. Like we were already married when we weren't married.
And so when we decided to get married, it was something that we felt we wanted to do. We also
wanted to bring our families together. You know, to sort of state what it is we truly feel about
each other in front of our friends and family."
» She says [on the rumours of trouble in the mariiage] - "There are a million wonderful things
I could say about my husband. Those rumors are not true, not true, not true."
» He says - "We will make romance out of any situation".
» She says - "We kind of met, and that was it. Every rule just went out the window.
We were telling each other we loved each other by the fourth day. I moved in in a week."
» He says - "It's not something that you just jump into. It's not a novelty. It's
funny because we've been married for over two years now, and there's no news stories.
It's only important to people when you get divorced."
» He says - "We don't spend very much time apart. When we did the last Crowes tour she was
on the road with me for seven months. She's had a very busy year. She's made four
films in a row. But she's gonna take some time off and come back with me. But we
definitely plan our lives around each other's schedules. That's why we got married."
» He says [when asked if it seemed strange that his status/media coverage increased after their marriage] -
"I don't think so. Not to me or her. I think people who are interested in that type of stuff,
aren't interested in our work. That's it own entity and it's own weird kind of thing. I mean,
my wife is a bona fide movie star, so that's gonna be part of it. But to me and her it's not that big of a deal."
» He says - "Obviously, what my wife does is much different than what I do, but she also conducts her life and
makes her decisions based on her soul.... If people take our picture when we're walking down the
street – whereas some people see a movie star and a rock star, I don't look at things like that."
» He says [about balancing their careers] - "She took a year and a half off to be with me on tour
and when I'm not working I'll go be with her. We're the luckiest people in the world, because as
long as there's a studio somewhere I can work, and I can always drag a guitar along. We
have both traveled all of our lives, so it's not too straining."
» She says - "When you're married, you can get too settled. I personally like to keep my husband
on his toes. How do I do that? Flirting."
» She says - "He was so fascinating. I was like, 'I think I'll have his baby.'"
