"I always had the most fun doing improv competitions in theater programs when I was younger, and that,s what I love about making comedies: the challenges of timing and physicality and improvisation."

Kate can't take advice
MSN Entertainment UK, April 17th 2008
Although she's a proud mum to four-year-old Ryder, Kate Hudson isn't keen to give parenting advice to her Fool's Gold co-star and dad-to-be Matthew McConaughey.
"The one thing I know I can't stand is advice," she declares. "I just can't take that. But if someone wants it or asks for it, I'm willing to offer whatever it is that I've experienced. I have this weird thing with parenting that there are no real answers. Instinctually you probably do the right thing, especially as a mother. Instinctually it all just happens the way it's supposed to happen.
"Then you make some mistakes and you discover things that are more difficult for you than maybe were for your friends and vice versa," she adds. "It's such an ongoing journey. The one thing that's amazing is that that's your life now - all your life is and all your life ever wants to be is just your child."
Kate, 29, admits that having Ryder has made her a bit more "on the pulse" at work since she last teamed up with Matthew on 2003 comedy, How To Lose A Guy In Ten Days.
"I have a baby on my hip so I want to know if I'm going to make it home in time to cook dinner," she says. "So there's a bit of that going on. That's probably different since we last worked together."
In Fool's Gold, Kate plays Tess, who is trying to get her life back together following her estrangement from her laid back treasure hunter husband Finn (Matthew). However, when he sets his sights on recovering some ancient exotic treasure from the sea, she's convinced to go along for the ride.
Inevitably, Kate and Matthew found themselves having to film several scenes underwater during the shoot on the Australian Gold Coast, and this meant coming face to face with some natural nasties in the Aussie ocean.
"It was actually really challenging," says Kate. "We were in about eight different locations because of these jellyfish that were sending people to hospital. I don't like sharks and I get freaked out about seeing what was under the water. But once I got under with all these amazing people on set helping me, I felt pretty comfortable.
"Underwater is not really like normal stunts where you feel like you have some control," she adds. "When you're working underwater, you can't just fool around because you're dead - your lungs will expand.
"But you all know is that once you're down there, you're really focused. There are a lot of emergency procedures and I got really good at them, so now I feel great about going in the ocean and scuba diving. I think the best thing about our job is getting to do things we would never have done otherwise. I would never have done scuba diving. I would never have wanted to know what was in there."
Kate also managed to introduce Ryder to the joys of the Aussie ocean in breaks from the shoot.
"Ryder is like a little fish now," she smiles. "He was swimming up a storm on the Gold Coast. I took him on a surf board in Byron Bay in very shallow water and it kind of freaked him out. So he got very timid for about two months, but now it's gone and he's fine."
