LONG TRAILER OF 'THE SKELETON KEY'
Charlie Rose: Hi, and please welcome Kate Hudson to this table for the first time... Believe that!
Kate Hudson: Yes!
Charlie Rose: And this is the movie that you wanted to do? (laughs)
Kate Hudson: (laughs) Yes!
Charlie Rose: After the birth of your baby?
Kate Hudson: After having a baby. Yeah, yeah.
Charlie Rose: For the first movie you do this?
Kate Hudson: Yeah, yeah. It's appropriate, right?
Well, actually i had signed on to do it before i got pregnant
Charlie Rose: Right.
Kate Hudson: And then i got pregnant and then i had to tell the studio and the director and i was kind of disappointed. I felt like i was disappointing the director and at the same time i was so happy that i was pregnant so i couldn't, you know, i couldn't really care less in a way.
And you know, happily they waited and... So i told them i'd be ready. And three and a half months after i had the baby... I went to work!
Charlie Rose: How's the baby?
Kate Hudson: He's fantastic.
Charlie Rose: (laughs)
Kate Hudson: He's getting big. It happens fast and he's getting to those toddler years. He's 19 months.
Charlie Rose: 19 months old.
Kate Hudson: Hum, Hum. (yes)
Charlie Rose: Walking, talking... He's doing everything?
Kate Hudson: That's what he's doing. Quite a personality!
He's got a wonderful sense of humor and, and yet he... You know, he takes certain thing very seriously. He's actually pretty serious.
Charlie Rose: And his dad'd involved?
Kate Hudson: Very involved, very involved actually! Yes, thankfully.
Charlie Rose: And your mother is a thrilled Grandmother?
Kate Hudson: Absolutely. And Pa is a thrilled Grandfather...
Charlie Rose: (laughs) That is great.
Kate Hudson: It's really great. It couldn't have come at a more special time for everybody, you know? Especially for my parents. Wyatt, sort of the last one leaving and then they have a new edition to their family, you know... So it came at a really special time for everybody.
Charlie Rose: What's the story about the Skeleton Key?
Kate Hudson: Say again?
Charlie Rose: What's the story?
Kate Hudson: The story is about... Oh... It's a... The story's about a... I play a hospice worker who goes into the bayou to play a... Who plays...To have a summer job and to work with a stroke, stroke patient, played by John Hurts. And i sort of start to uncover strang things in the house and inevitably end up uncovering a... 'Hoodoo' room
Charlie Rose: Voodoo room?
Kate Hudson: Yes, 'hoodoo'...Yeah, hoodoo. It's a darker, more black magic based form of voodoo. And a... I uncover this room and then all... You know, the story just keeps going and gets crazy and it's a wonderful twist ending.
Charlie Rose: Peter plays Luke... Now who is that character?
Kate Hudson: He is Devereaux and... Violet's and Ben Devereaux's lawyer, stock lawyer.
Charlie Rose: And Gena Rowlands plays?
Kate Hudson: Violet.
Charlie Rose: Violet, yeah. And she is...
Kate Hudson: She is the woman of the house.
Charlie Rose: Yeah.
Kate Hudson: And what a fan... That's...
Charlie Rose: To work with her?
Kate Hudson: Oh my god, yeah. It was amazing.
And i feel like that's when you... You know, 26 and... There's certain people that i've looked up to and, and... In particular performances and her being one of the many influences... To me it was just like...
Charlie Rose: Oh. Take a look at this. This is a scene between the two of you. This is where Violet gives you the skeleton key. Here it is.
THE SKELETON KEY MOVIE CLIP
Charlie Rose: I gotta ask you this... I gotta tell you this. I just said 'Is your husband on tour?' and you said
Kate Hudson: Yeah, all the time.
Charlie Rose: All the time. And you go on the bus and hang out?
Kate Hudson: I do. I go... And we basically
Charlie Rose: Do you take the baby?
Kate Hudson: And we take the baby and we get on the bus and we travel around... All across America. Which is... I mean...
Charlie Rose: You never perform?
Kate Hudson: Me?
Charlie Rose: Yes.
Kate Hudson: No!
Charlie Rose: You don't sing at all?
Kate Hudson: Well...
Charlie Rose: A little? But Almost Famous was...
Kate Hudson: Yes, well but i was... You know...
Charlie Rose: I know.
Kate Hudson: I was the girl on the bus! (laughs)
Charlie Rose: Yes, i know. I know. (laughs)
Was that the... What was that? Was that an early film of yours?
Kate Hudson: That was probably... I think that was...
Charlie Rose: Second or third? Fourth?
Kate Hudson: Yeah, fourth.
Charlie Rose: And how was working with Cameron Crowe?
Kate Hudson: Working with Cameron Crowe was a... You know, to me i think there are...
I've only worked with two directors who have demanded everything from me. And i love that, i just love it.
Charlie Rose: And they keep reaching out for more?
Kate Hudson: Hum, hum. (nods)
Charlie Rose: And that's where you learn?
Kate Hudson: And that's how... That's where I learn. And that's when i can be challenged, and... And Cameron was... I mean to have had that experience at 19, you know... Is pretty amazing and it was hard, hard, good work. Solid work.
And he's fun and he's focused and... Demanding.
Charlie Rose: What's he working on now? Do you know?
Kate Hudson: He just finnished Elizabethtown.
Charlie Rose: Oh.
Kate Hudson: Which is, i think comes out this, this year.
Charlie Rose: This is what you said about growing up as Goldie and Kurt's daughter.
"People are going to write that i've had all these great advantages. I can't do anything about that, but i just gotta get out... Get on with life and work. If i'm not doing a good job, i will soon be found and then sent on my way. I've gotta try that bit harder."
Do you really have to make it... Work harder because people would assume you got it because you were Goldie's daughter?
Kate Hudson: Yeah, i never wanted people to... I think perception is, you know...
Perception, especially on this business that's so obsessed with celebrity... You know, i think the world is obsessed with celebrity... I think that, you know, i never wanted to be perceived as someone who had it... You know, that it just got handed to me. Cause it's just not the case.
Charlie Rose: And that you didn't deserve it?
Kate Hudson: Yeah, and i grew up with two parents who have a very solid work ethic. And to us, when they went to work, that was their job, they took it very seriously. They didn't take themselves seriously, they took their work seriously.
And a... One i would never let them down. You know my work ethic comes and derives from how i was raised and i take that pretty seriously. And, and i think with the auditioning process when i first started... You know, you are under a little bit of a microscope. People want to knowwhy you're doing it or 'Can she do it?'. And i just wanted to... I just loved it. I just wanted to work.
Charlie Rose: When did you know that this is what you wanted to do?
Kate Hudson: (laughs) I never thought or i never knew anything...
Charlie Rose: You know i've just heard, i've just heard the laugh that i've heard before, so.
Kate Hudson: I never even... I didn't even, i didn't even...
Charlie Rose: You never even thought about anything else?
Kate Hudson: Well, (laughs)...
Charlie Rose: You never did?
Kate Hudson: Never. Maybe like dance...
Charlie Rose: Did you think about drama, comedy? Or did you thought about everything?
Kate Hudson: No, i was always... You know to be honest i was very serious. About like high school and... Yeah. I didn't look at anything... I really love acting. I mean, and i find it interesting that, that... People get sort of the... You know it's easy to say, you know... I'm Goldie's daughter and therefor i'm light and happy cause we're a happy family, and everything's perfect.
But the actual craft that i felt inlove with, especially when i went to William Town Theatre Festival when i was sixteen, that changed everything for me.
Charlie Rose: How did it change everything?
Kate Hudson: Well, i was surrounded by an incredibly creative surrounding and people who took it very seriously. And it was the first time i realized, you know, there are so many talented, talented actors out there that will never have the opportunities that some people get. And i'm gonna take this seriously, cause i love it. And i don't want to let those people down who didn't have those opportunities. You know?
Charlie Rose: Yeah.
Where have you learned the most about this craft of acting? Obviously you've learned a lot from doing it.
Kate Hudson: Yeah, i mean...
Charlie Rose: You're 27 ?
Kate Hudson: 26 yeah.
Charlie Rose: 26.
Kate Hudson: So i'm still, i mean, i still feel...
Charlie Rose: With what, with Cameron Crowe you learned... You worked with Billy... You learned...
Kate Hudson: Yes, exactly!
Charlie Rose: I mean you've worked with a whole range... Look at the directors you've worked with: Cameron Crowe/Almost Famous, Rob Reiner/Alex & Emma, Robert Altman/The Cutting Room...
Kate Hudson: That was amazing!
Charlie Rose: That was amazing?
Kate Hudson: Oh, cause i'm such a big Robert Altman fan. You know, for me that was... You know...
Charlie Rose: What was your favorite Altman movie, Nashville?
Kate Hudson: Hmm... McCabe.
Charlie Rose: Yeah, me too.
Kate Hudson: Yeah.
Charlie Rose: Garry Marshall in Raising Helen, James Ivory in Le Divorce, Shekhar Kapur in Four Feathers. When you're working, i mean... Are you asking? I mean how much of this is simply a...
Kate Hudson: I, I really like to work with directors. I want... I don't...
Charlie Rose: You want to just be a collaborator?
Kate Hudson: I feel like they're my coach, you know? And i don't want to let my coach down.
It's... inevitably the directors' vision and I want to able to accommodate it.
Charlie Rose: And you want to know what it it, and make sure you're...
Kate Hudson: Being honest and being able to put it up there as honeslty as i can.
Charlie Rose: How about stage work, you want to do stage work?
Kate Hudson: Yeah, I... Yeah, big time actually.
Charlie Rose: Big time means that you're anxious to do it?
Kate Hudson: I am...
Charlie Rose: To jump at the chance?
Kate Hudson: I actually would like to be able to dance... onstage.
Charlie Rose: Are you a dancer?
Kate Hudson: Hum, hum.
Charlie Rose: You are? You mean trained as a dancer?
Kate Hudson: Hum, hum. My mom put me in class when i was three and i've been in class ever since.
Charlie Rose: Did all of this... I mean did you have a small advantage or not?
A lot of young people who are children of famous people... Become, they become a tad bit, shy and insecure. Others develop a sense of confidence, because their parents are secure and confident. And they're able to in view it. What happened to you? Do you think...
Kate Hudson: To be honest, i don't... I've never felt like i've fit into that category...
Charlie Rose: Of either confident or insecure?
Kate Hudson: Well, i just... My parents were so... They moved us to Colorado. They wanted us to live normal, they didn't wanted us to be...
Charlie Rose: They moved you to California. You moved to California, because not only did they love the West, but, but they also wanted you to live in an environment that wasn't too Hollywood?
Kate Hudson: In Colorado, yeah.
Charlie Rose: And did you like Colorado?
Kate Hudson: Oh, we loved it! Oh yeah. You know everytime we go back it feels like home, you know.
Charlie Rose: You go back, meaning the house is still... Your property is still there?
Kate Hudson: My parents are...
Charlie Rose: They don't go much?
Kate Hudson: We, yeah, we still go there a lot. Oh, they're there a lot.
Charlie Rose: And you live here?
Kate Hudson: I live in New York and L.A.
Charlie Rose: As a choice?
Kate Hudson: Yes, i prefer being in New York.
Charlie Rose: Because?
Kate Hudson: I like the life here better, i like my friends, i like that i can walk down the street and meet people that have nothing to do with what i do and are interesting, lead interesting lives.
I like going to my friend's restaurant and staying up all night talking about things. You know, i mean, i just love the life here.
Charlie Rose: It is the most interesting place to live in the world, don't you think?
Kate Hudson: I think so.
Charlie Rose: What else are you working on now?
Kate Hudson: Actually, next i go do a comedy with Owen Wilson and Matt Dillon with the Russo brothers who've got this show on television called 'Arrested Development'
Charlie Rose: Oh, they're terrific.
Kate Hudson: Yes they are, it's a great show.
Charlie Rose: Arrested Development is a wonderful, wonderful show.
Kate Hudson: I 'm really excited. I think it's gonna be really, really funny and very good and very... You know, smart funny. And that's a... That's always nice. (laughs)
Charlie Rose: And when does that start?
Kate Hudson: A... That's in October. Beginning October. So i'll be on the road until I start working.
Charlie Rose: Alright, here's another clip. This is where, again, Gena Rowlands tells you that... Why she has no mirrors in the house. Roll the tape.
